along with sense or this? gigs, i figured i might as well list gigs I play with inecto school, chops (my new improvised psychedelic dance band with moz and leon) and agriculture here too, as well as gigs i've played when i've joined other bands for a gig, such as i had an inkling (who i have been asked to play with on a more regular basis). mainly to aid my memory, more than anything else. i joined inecto school in february 2006, and we get described as something like this; "the inecto school are a throbbing vibrating raunchy improv band who make spiritual music for a secular world; these sex crazed monks of luuurve will have us all making out in the field by the time they are done".

upcoming gigs...

10-05-06 @ matilda social centre, sheffield
- noisedoll basement present - magik markers (super primitive super groovy improv rock from usa.... toured with sonic youth... basically they're fucking great!!!), chora, inecto school and bologna pony (chaps from souvaris - i think) will be combining their three forces into one improvisational menagerie, elizabeth (andrew abbott from kill yourself, that fucking tank, obscene baby auction playing improvised guitar loops, might be quiet, might not be...)

07-05-06 @ the lantern theatre, sheffield - with great lake swimmers (canada) and monkey swallows the universe (who were utterly awful, twee radio two fodder). i found a review of the gig, they didn't like inecto school very much, heh; "cobbling together a range of obscure intrumentation... let's just say that I have photos for reference and if there's any danger of them getting on a stage within half a mile of me again the small arms are coming out of the secret cupboard. their ramshackle nature did, though, suit the venue."

05-05-06 @ the cardigan arms, leeds -
with james blackshaw (12 string guitar warmth), inecto school and build a fort, set it on fire

02-05-06 @ the holy trinity church, leeds - viking moses, inecto school

28/29/30-04-06 @ the brudenell social club, leeds - chinchillafest4! - a.P.A.t.T, narcosis, tigers!, unicorn love, pifco, not in this town, charlottefield, joeyfat, lords, david thomas broughton, scarecrows, eiger, sailors, inecto school, the unit ama, that fucking tank, threads, last of the real hardmen, the i.k. jan cremers, war all the time, anyway. added bonus of monday being a bank holiday! party! i found a little review of my set from marcus, who released the cowtown/corinthians 7"; "the day started with sense or this? which was just dom chinchilla making noise on a keyboard and a clarinet, it was great but nobody was really listening" [although i should note, i didn't use a keyboard... it was a series of car speakers and contact mics positioned into various feedback patterns]. the same marcus wrote this about inecto school; "i can't remember who played instead of them, it could have been inecto school - they were awesome. a very seasoned looking drummer, dom chinchilla (again on his clarinet!) and a bunch of other playerz on violas and odd drum pieces, etc/ and were generally just made an awesome improv sound"

05-04-06 @ the forum cafe bar, sheffield - inecto school will be improvising and reacting to the screening of a film called 'spectres' by edwin rostron - we will be watching for the first time as we play, as part of a short circuits interupted cutting edge short film night.

02-04-06 @ the corporation, sheffield - damo suzuki playing with a 10 piece group consisting of inecto school, drummer chris corsano, (known for his utterly incredible improv multi-limbed approach to his kit, his willingness to explore the sonic possibilities hidden in every surface of the drums, which has seen him play with thurston moore, jim o'rourke, paul flaherty, and many more). bassoon/tenor saxophonist mick beck (as an improvising big band leader to solo performer, mick is known for his energy and originality: his playing covers the full emotional gamut from heartbreaking to mischievous, and from abstracts to compelling swing) and chora. hot snack and martin archer are also playing sets with damo. the gig was recorded on DAT and filmed too, you can see it on youtube here.

01-04-06 @ the brudenell social club, leeds
- gojonnygogogogo presents - damo suzuki (damo was part of can from 1970 to 1973, recording a number of well-regarded albums such as tago mago and ege bamyasi. can was an experimental rock group founded in germany in 1968. describing themselves as an "anarchist community", and constructing their music largely through improvisation and edit, they had only occasional commercial success, but exerted a huge influence on subsequent rock and electronic music. they are generally held to be the finest of the original krautrock bands, and are among the most important experimental artists in recent music history. since 1993 damo has been touring every contintent of the world, playing entirely improvised sets with different musicans along the way). damo's network band will include disco stu from quack quack, joe and neil from bilge pump, dave lazenby and maybe one more. support from inecto school. moz recorded the inecto school set on DAT and it sounds really good, and it was also filmed so hopefully we'll have a video to download of it soon. i found this review of the gig too: "inecto school, despite their name, are far from the dour experimentalists that one might have feared. a largely acoustic line-up (stand-up bass, guitar, drums) is augmented by two members who supply brass and woodwind, bells, thumb piano, electronics and radio interference. the set has an improvised feel, but the band have a more unified sound than many improvising groups: the players allow each other room, and everybody’s contribution is given equal weighting. an excellent sound mix ensures that the playing is crystal clear – every note, scratch, hiss and slurp is audible. the melodic guitar forms a loose centre to the music, bringing to mind six organs of admittance, albeit in an expanded form. experimental music can sometimes be so forbidding, it’s nice to see a group project amiability and enjoyment on stage" (Oliver Goodyear)

24-03-06 @ the common place
- £4/£5 - harmonic rooms present - directing hand (glasgow) alex nielson has played free form percussion in bands like one ensemble of daniel padden, scatter, taurpis tula, richard youngs, will oldham… directing hand is his solo effort of effortlessly reconciled avant/freak ecstasies and lonesome folk drift, joined for part of the set by phil todd. chora (sheffield) screaming head phone madness. inecto school - improvised noise, stomps, soundscapes.

17/18-03-06 stfu leeds festival @ the commonplace
(23-25 Wharf Street). STFU is a non-profit European wide electronic arts collective. With no hierarchy, collective members are free to put on an event in their local town... barbarian, skeksi, random number, quip and replete, hands and fingers, the unpleasants, midwich, nanospherecomplex, agriculture (working lunch stirfry installation/free meal), millicent, scrubber fox and paperball, dncn, batfinks, dj ghettoblast, ufoel and moriarty, mookid, kid quaalude, model fighter, indigo mews, bla, nesh, gypsiesdog, genjutsushi, dj sneaky playing not-tronica between sets, moog documentary, stfu - the documentary, soundwalking workshop (agriculture), modular software for a brighter tomorrow (audiomulch)

12-03-06 @ the cricketers arms, bramall lane, sheffield - dyse, bilge pump, larkin grimm, and an improvisation collaboration of inecto school, chora and larkin grimm

22-02-06 @ the cricketers arms,
bramall lane, sheffield - £4 - www.singingknivesrecords.co.uk - jack rose, chris corsano, chora and inecto school. You can download video footage of all three performances from freenoise, and i found this review of the gig there too: "we were also treated to a blinding set by leeds' inecto school this time joined by rob and ben from chora who sat at the back playing a vast array of knobs, wires and broken instruments. superb drumming style from the older guy in the corner while a trio on double bass, tiny guitar and clarinet stood at the front. plenty of free form material filled the latter stages but my favourite was the earlier rhythm laden heavy and heady trancey droney stuff which materialised into something a bit like hawkwind on jazz"

24-02-06 @ the fenton, leeds 8pm, £3/4 - termite club - bongoleeros "are strange hotpants obsessed creatures from the hills of pitchly, yorkshire. the music they make is primitive, horny & spiritual & they are dedicated to the 'de-magnetising' of brains" (bongoleeros). dog is from los angeles, california, having moved there from boston in 1997. dog began is 1990 in osaka, japan and released 2 tapes there. since then, dog has released many cds and cassettes and been on compilations on rrrecords, relapse/release, stomach ache, povertech, tochnit aleph, bt recordings and a slew of other labels. dog runs the label love earth music and has polluted the world with a number of releases. live, dog has many facets, sometimes a bloody explosion of metal and electricity, other times knob twirling and screaming dominate. no two shows are ever the same. a collective of musicians make up the band, with about nine members all around California at present. dog’s latest cd is "industrial accidents" on lem, and there are 2 others planned for 2006 also and a cd on audiobot. monopolka (russia) boris monopolskij aka philipp woolokitin started with goofy tape collages in the age of 12. his first "noise-record-with-artwork –sales–and-hijoukajdan-influence" was done when he was 14 and included the samples of tinto brass as well as gore artwork. later he started monopolka and produced more than 100 records in the most violent way heavily influenced by fluxus, mail art collaborations and old school violent trash noise on the strong improvisation basis. equipment he uses includes kids toys of his own collection, amplified and turned into the piece of junk after the show. it's going more and more difficult to describe his sound by the hand of similarity, but if you imagine the simpson's series where junko hiroshide was the queen she could be jack-at-a-pinch of this question. spike jones gone noisac can also be the reference point. unicorn love are "the most popular christian rock band in britain" (alexis petridis, the guardian, see review). cheapmachines (uk) has been operating since 1997, acting at the interface between noise electronics, generative software, field recordings, tape music and drones. recordings are made using an assortment of scavenged, customised and often malfunctioning electronic and non-musical objects used deliberately to provide a complex, atonal sound-set not easily sourced from standard musical instruments. the area of disorganised organised sound, noise and silence forms the basis of all Cheapmachines investigations, live work and recordings. holiday stabbings "is a drone party in your skull, utilising voice-box manipulated microphonal deep pulse, fuzz-drown feedback pools, backlit vinyl crackle light and heavy-dawn harmonic whorls. cold spring records. way to make my cat think my apartment is a fucking black-hole or something" (dead angel zine). neil campbell of the vibracathedral orchestra provides some of the finest 'potting shed non pro rock jamming meets pop meets non idiomatic improv' moves you could ask for.

03-02-06 @ the holy trinty church, leeds. the one ensemble of daniel padden create otherworldly, sparse, tonally melodious, free reign surrealism. music that is hung together with the finest of composure: daniel and his ensemble bring together outsider folk, revenant blues, indian ragas, detuned laments and epic atonement. nalle make music fused with magic; the haunting songs and sprawling melodies speak of their relationship with the sun, the mountains, and ravens, drawing on folk forms in a wholly idiosyncratic manner. inecto school play chanting sounds from the earth, and i am playing as a guest of theirs. come early to fully appreciate hanna’s completely orchestrated dawn chorus simulation, ‘salutation to the sun’ - compiled manipulated imitations of real bird calls using her own unique vocal chords.

24-01-06 @ the crow squat, leeds with duckstab, mc positive bastard (or something like that), agh and other bands i don't remember the names of because of booze.

09-11-05 @ the love apple cafe/bar, bradford with bela emerson (striving to explore the potential and extend the boundaries of the cello’s place in contemporary music. she captivates audiences with her unique improvised performances on electric cello with loops and effects. each piece is new, composed spontaneously, and never to be repeated. bela recorded five radio 1 sessions for john peel and the blue room as a member of pico, and works as a session musician; most recently with british sea power, the lovegods, mezzowave, and lamb’s oddur mar runarsson). euphonious murmur blend (improvised found sound manipulation). here is a photo that bela took of me playing:

04-11-05 @ the vine, leeds (last minute addition, don't remember the other bands names, erp)

14-10-05 @ the brudenell social club, leeds (monitor and short circuits present tunes in). with 7 hertz (live improvised chamber/jazz in response to “from death to image” by horatio eastwood), gottswebster (a collaborative art duo from sheffield, whose performances investigate social interactions, taking inspiration from creative time-wasting, ridicule, ritual insult and jest), endenor (a collaborative trio of reeds player ove volquartz, guitarist chris sharkey, free improvisational vocalist maria jardardottir utilizing norwegian poetry as source for ideas). plus short films from josafiend (live performance of 16mm film ‘static#1’), a special screening of 'the fair' (a film by local artists lee maloney and pritpal bhamra, where lee will perform the film’s monologue soundtrack live the monitor showreels), the monitor showreels (ben hargreaves, alison philp, terry wragg, patryk rebisz and HK119, rachel smith, jeremy newman, signe bauman, jane ostins, evanthia grigoropoulou, claire mcardle, will docherty and lucy gibson) and the short circuit showreels (presenting a selection of the best british and international narrative shorts, including chris waitt's fantastic 'dupe', about a young man who goes in for a bit of DIY genetic engineering). and finally, 'crutchmaster' by nicholas jenkins (an experimental documentary about bill shannon or ‘crutchmaster’, a new york performance artist with a unique and vibrant dance technique, rooted in street culture but informed by the fine arts). this was a joint fundraising event for the improvements to the concert room at the brudenell and monitor's exhibition programme.
this gig was filmed, i hope to get a copy of it sometime, and i'll put it up for download when i do.

hmm, so i've played quite a few more gigs than on this list, but i'll be damned if i can remember them...do you? 2004 seems a bit of a blank... there was a pretty shambolic one in grimsby with forstella ford, tigers! and i'm pretty sure the late, great, stand played too. i played in the living room of captain dicko of the chinchilla bretheren at a house party when half of tigers! played an improv set and there was probably another band playing as well. i played at the cardigan arms with pfaff and cowtown too.

if you want to ask me to play, email me.
i can travel cheap; on my own using public transportation such as bus or train. if you want an extra treat, i can travel in my tour van and bring extra stuff such as massive amplification. you might be interested to know that i am self sufficient so that i won't need to borrow anything when i play - all i will need to play a gig is a single plug socket.

if you want to join me for an improvised set, please ask yourself the following question; are you a nice person? if the answer is yes and you fancy playing whatever it is you play, get in touch?! if the answer was 'no', indicating that you're not a nice person, then i don't want to play with you.

touring - on 8th april 2006 i got a new tour van after my first was stolen just over a year before... i'm going to arrange some kind of UK tour with another band that i like and it will be fun, yes.
